So to apply this as an insult to our generation, it has a similar connotation to the "participation award" insult. A "special snowflake" is someone who thinks they are unique or has an extraordinary life experience beyond what anyone else deals with or understands, even though we're all in the same storm.

I find it extra funny because all though no two snowflakes are alike, at any appreciable distance, they look and act identical.
