The US 740Ld is called a 730Ld in Germany. The US 535d also features the 30d engine, and the US 328d is actually a 320d.
This reminds me of how they sell the Z4 sDrive35i with smaller brake discs in the US compared to the rest of the world. It is a bit "funny"...

I think it's because of the huge badge vanity in the country, it's the only explanation I can imagine for it. 530d to 535d was slightly pushing it, 730d to 740d is just too much...
