I would agree with Haydon. If you had a factory built Individual like Xdrive - it makes all the sense to have the chrome strip.
When I had my M5, you would see, from time to time, a regular 5 Series with the M5 logo on the back. IMHO, it may be a great look for 50% of the people out there, but for the other 50% that know the difference - I feel it's a bit embarrassing.
Alternatively, I know some people like the "clean" look with no badges. Most of time, it is on a 325 or a 525 (just by noticing the exhaust and rims). I think in these cases, they want you to believe it is a different model. I say be proud to own what you own - BMW's are terrific cars no matter what you drive. Sometimes (*cough* rarely) it's not about the horsepower - but the dynamics of the car.
