Technically M GmbH is their own company, owned by BMW and able to take advantage of BMW Groups emission umbrella... Just like with Porsche under VAG...
The GmbH part is the German abbreviation for a company with limited responsibility, or Ltd (Gesellschaft mit begrenster Haftung = GmbH)
