BMW needs to bring over one of their 4 cylinder diesels, like the 320d, to the US. I've driven the 335d a couple of times and was blown away by how powerful it is but also disappointed by its gas mileage which was not much more than the gas powered BMWs we own. A smaller engine would make a lot more sense if you ask me, something that's slower than a 328i but which gets over 40mpg combined would make sense to a lot of other people, too.

I think the sales of the 335d and X5 35d prove that people would be more interested in a smaller, more efficient diesel in the 3 series when only 10% of 3 series sold in the US were diesels while 50% of X5s sold in the same time period were diesel, the heavy X5 needs the strong motor but even in that application, the 35d only gets 3 more miles per gallon than the 35i.
