The engine in the F01/F02 B7 is completely different than the engine in the E65/E66 B7.

While the rated specifications for torque and horsepower in the new Alpina twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 are the same as for the old supercharged 4.4 liter V8 (based on the older V8 found on the pre-facelifted 745i, not the 4.8 liter V8 in the E65/E66), in the only actual driving review I've read, the reviewer believes the horsepower and torque in the new engine is significantly underrated.

An important clue to how much power is actually in the B7 is that Alpina supposedly considered every transmission in BMW's current inventory before settling on the ZF 6-Speed switchtronic as the only transmission sufficiently durable to handle the B7's power. Presumably Alpina's consideration included the 8-speed in the 544 hp/533 lbft rated 760li and that transmission was found wanting. Draw your own conclusions.
