I suspect the premium is due to the heavy emissions equipment the US/Canada forces manufacturers to put on their diesel models.
Look at VW, for example. a TDI Highline Golf 5 with 6MT is $29,395 CAD while the 2.5L petrol Highline Golf 5 with 6MT is $27,095 CAD. That's a 2.3k difference and actually a bigger premium than BMWs, although not by much.

I wouldn't mind a 325d either. Just as long as the F3x diesel doesn't cost an arm and a leg (like the 335d did) and has an MT option.
