So I decided to sit down and crunch the numbers and thought I'd share them with everyone.
m240i gets about 240 miles per fill up at 20mpg, which is 12 gallons to fill, at $2.69 (price for premium where I'll be moving) is $32.28 per tank.
prospect vehicle gets 300 miles per fill up at 35 mpg, which is 8.6 gallons to fill, at $2.19 (price for regular) is $18.83 per tank.
I'm estimating about 302 miles per week of driving (40.4 miles round trip x 5 times a week + 100 miles for leisure driving) x 52 weeks = 15704 miles per year
15704/20mpg=785.2 gallons x 2.69 = $2112.19 per year in gas
15704/35mpg=448.69 gallons x 2.19 = $982.63 per year in gas
(for shits n giggles, did a hybrid, non plug in)
15704/45mpg=348.98 gallons x 2.19 = $764.27 per year in gas
Savings of $1129.56 to $1347.92 per year in fuel.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find...on=phev1Prompt to see what a 2011 and 2017 chevy volt would save per year (because I know those are pretty cheap when bought used) and got these numbers.
$2.69 for premium, $0.12 per kWh, 40.4 miles per day, 15704 miles per year
2011 Volt :
Total fuel (gas and electric) = $783 per year
estimated 11 trips to the gas station a year
2017 Volt:
Total fuel (gas and electric) = $596 per year
estimated 1 trip to the gas station a year
2012 Prius:
Total fuel (gas and electric) = $695 per year
estimated 25 trips to the gas station a year
2017 Prius:
Total fuel (gas and electric) = $543 per year
estimated 12 trips to the gas station a year
The calculator has a bunch of plug in hybrids to select from if anyone wants to mess with it, but crunching the numbers pretty much helped me decide. If I will get another car to save money on gas, it will most likely be a plug in hybrid because of the extra savings. However, even then I'd need to insure it (and finance if that route is chosen) for around $130 a month to see even the slightest savings of a couple dollars a year (break even would be $130.77 a month).
Wonder how those electric motorcycles are coming along....
