This is a big problem. I have a Mazda 3 hatch with a manual. I think the window sticker is something like 28/38. I typically get about 24 mpg in mixed driving and usually see about 32 on the highway.
If you're used to faster cars, slow cars are likely going to get lousy mileage. And my car's naturally aspirated. Add a turbo and a small displacement motor and it's just gonna get worse.
Back when I had my M Coupe, it was in the body shop after someone hit it and a friend let me borrow his STI. I filled it up, drove around for the day and was shocked to see the gas light on already. I drove 70 something miles on 10 gallons of gas. I drove it hard, but nothing crazy or even heavy speeding.
