Well after work tonight I tested the limits of both. I saw that one of my favorite
raptors has returned to hunting at my local city park, and set out with the 7D fully loaded at 10FPS and Case 1 set. It tracked this white-tailed kite effortlessly from a bright gray sky background to the clutter you see here. It's actually a pretty small target that my other cameras would really struggle to keep up with. This was shot with the nicely hand-hold-able 300mm2.8 + 1.4TC for a 420mm shot. After this series I went back to the car and swapped out the 1.4 for the 2X. I was using auto ISO with +1 EC dialed in. This worked pretty well, although as it got darker, I dialed up the EC to 1.3 when using the 2X. White birds can be tricky.
