I removed the crate about 9 months ago. And now have a dog bed in its place. However my dog is not a chewer or destructive. What kind of dog do you have? Some are just prone to chewing. I do close all the doors to rooms and limit her access to just the living room. You could try that and then make sure there is nothing to chew on, or get something the dog can chew on bone/toy.
