My little guy (he is now six) spent his first 2 years in a crate when my wife and I were at work. Eventually we started to trust him to just the first floor of the house, and once he was about 3, he had full reign of the house when we were out. He has been great, and i've actually caught him a couple times just running up and sleeping in our bed when we are out (he is a 13lb little guy so we dont mind).

Like some others have mentioned here, my wife and I work most of the day, so I just couldn't leave him crated that long and expect him not to get depressed or anxious.
