Fun with SSDs.

Test platform:

#1
Dell PowerEdge R730 dual E5-2670v3 processors, 256GB DDR4 memory, H730 PERC in HBA mode.

#2
Dell PowerEdge R730 dual E5-2640v3 processors, 256GB DDR4 memory

On platform #1, Windows Server 2012 R2 was installed and 6 1.92TB 12 Gbps SAS SSDs were installed and set up in a Storage Spaces pool. Below is the screen shot of the disk benchmark I ran on the Storage Spaces volume.

On platform #2, the server is running VMware ESXi 5.5. The SSD storage is actually the newer technology called NVMe. The NVMe drive is mounted onto a PCIe board and is directly accessed through the PCIe bus. The size of the drive is 1.6TB. The VM is Windows Server 2012 R2 installed onto the NVMe drive. The test results are below.

The results of Storage Spaces was pretty eye opening. The results for the NVMe drive were also quite good but I sort of expected slightly better performance numbers. I may try to move the NVMe drive into platform #1 and redo the test to see if there will be any change in the performance of the NVMe drive.

I figure some of the geeks here on the board would appreciate this thread.
