odd stuff, thanks for the info
and you think it is quieter than the 740i?
that is bizzare, I have a 2015 european 730d. Enough power but noisy, thought petrol engine would be smoother
Well, my comparison is that my 740LdX is quieter at speed than my 750LiX.

BMW went nuts when it designed the U.S. spec'd 740 LdX. It pulled out all the stops. It even put added sound deadening materials in the engine room and underlayment.

At idle, the U.S. 740LdX has that typical grumpy, asynchronous diesel idle. But, at speed (75 MPH) the sound of the engine all but disappears. It's the strangest thing. All you hear on a good highway is the subtle wind noise.

I can only analogize it to flying in a Boeing 757 at 35,000 feet on a calm day. You feel like your standing still, and mainly wind noise.

BMW moved the diesel motor out a few inches from the firewall in order get the weight of the motor evenly distributed across the front axle.

Moving the motor out a few inches from the firewall is a significant sound reducer.

Of course, the diesel will vibrate the fillings out of your teeth. So, the petrol is more refined without a doubt.

But, the 440 horses of the 750's petrol are artificially coaxed out by way of a turbos. Plus, the 750LiX's fun factor has been diminished by way of its turbo lag.

After driving the petrol 750Li and 750LiX since the e65/e66 and now the F01/F02, I can say that I am well versed in the 8 pot's petrol and the windmill introduced with the F01/F02.

The problem with the 750 petrol is that it was really a binary proposition: off throttle or on throttle.

The damn thing is so fast combined with its enormously latent lag, you almost have to drive ahead of yourself.

You don't go from 0 to 60 in a 750. No sir, you start out at 60. But, that's only after you endure an inexplicable and frustrating lag. What this means us that by the time the 750 is moving, there is an object in front of you---a car, a red light, or simply no road left. The 750 isn't a supercar, but it's no slouch either. The binary feel of the 750, makes it somewhat frustrating for USA driving.

Now, the 740LdX is a supercar from 0 to 30. It tosses you in your seat every time. Now, from 31 to 60, she's a fat pig. But, once your at 60, the ride to....
