I've gotten a lot of job opportunities through LinkedIn. Most of them were actually opportunities that are relevant to my field, which I appreciate. I'm currently actively working with a recruiter on a new job opportunity so if this works out I'd be a huge supporter of using it.
I don't see what's the harm of having one.. it would probably help you than hurt you to have one.
