Valve stem seals get toasted and hardened because the heat that turbos in this "hot vee valley" produce. Its a design flaw in first generation N63O0.
Same burning and hardening happens to all rubber and every gasket near turbos sooner or later in that engine. Its a tight package with insufficient cooling.
Yes, the new seals are improved and different part number. They should tolerate heat better.
