AMG has always confused people with it's pseudo AMG packaged cars and it's true AMG cars like the C63. Even then you can easily get a standard C and a AMG C63 confused as they literally LOOK the same aside from the front lip and rear diffuser + quad exhaust.
You generally won't get a M2 and M235i (M240i) confused. Nor would you generally confuse a M3/M4 to it's 3er/4er. The pseudo M might come close to a real M in terms of performance but they aren't a full M car and BMW so far has not got them mixed together.
If others are getting them mixed up already when it comes to BMW Ms or cannot tell the difference that is on you. I don't get a X5M/X6M confused with a "Diesel" and I already don't agree with how BMW labels it's SUV cars.
