I'm really happy to say that you are not right!
Now we are on the way. On morning we were on borders (Macedonia and Greece) and now we are down ( 150km from Patra) today way was only about 10% of highway, the 90% were country roads and we made it for 11.8l/100km and that is awesome!
With full tank of gasoline range was about 700km.
