Under certain driving conditions, sure -- 'accelerating resonably' (whatever the heck that means) being one. Not all driving conditions, however. Nowhere
near all.
I said it before, and I'll say it again -- modern transmissions with a high number of gears in passenger vehicles serve one overarching purpose: fuel efficiency.
Particularly in this day and age of ECU management and its flattened and broadened power and torque curves. Engines aren't peaky anymore -- which is a reason to
not have to use so many gears.
On a multipurpose road bicycle, the same principles apply: the need for fuel efficiency combined with a very narrow power band mean that many gears is an advantage, depending on conditions. It's applied physics.
