I can report that it works! And it works quite well.
I made sure I left my remote keys in the house and just used the spare key to unlock the car. Once you unlock the car with the key, it also disarms the alarm system (I assume the transceiver in the door handle communicates with the chip in the plastic portion of the spare key to do this). Once inside, I held the plastic portion of the key next to the steering wheel column as per the little symbol printed in that location and after about 10 seconds, I pressed the start/stop button while I was pushing down the break and the engine started up and the car 'came alive' just the same way when I have my remote key in my pocket!
