In part it's because devs were basically told "oh, the apps will work with iOS8 and you don't need to do anything unless you want to make use of the new features" and what was discovered in beta was that this wasn't anywhere near true. Now people are scrambling to make their apps work as well as they can until they are able to have a full blown update.

The 6 is basically the size of every other smart phone on the market on the android and win phone side of things. Something around a 5in screen has become the "go to" so to speak. The 6+ is actually kind of funny to see people holding to their heads; same goes for the note and other phablets.
