Mine does the same; I have a blackberry curve.
To make matters worse you also have to say things backwards when using voice dialing. For example if you stored the name "Alex UK1" you have to say "UK1, Alex". I didn't see an option for this anywhere...the only thing I can think of is storing all your entries in the last name field.
