When I first saw the video I thought "oh, he'll just hit the barrier." I didn't realize they were plastic and not concrete or at least filled with something. The appearance of safety is not safety. I would not expect a casual spectator to inspect the barrier's suitability and so I can't fault them. Perhaps it was more obvious if you were at the event, but as mentioned above, those barriers were a joke and that's on the event organizer. Poor course design (where the turns are located) and worthless barriers in front of the crowd.
