That is correct. The camera for the lane departure warning system in located in the base of the center mounted rear view mirror facing the road ahead of you. That's why you need to make sure that the windshield in that area is clean otherwise the system can't recognize the markings on the road.
I think the top view cameras mounted in the exterior rear view mirror were first introduced on the X5M and X6M, although the option has been in the BMW parts database for quite a few years as an retrofit camera option!
