OMRITIME I found out where the engine number is...
Its on the front of the engine - looking into the engine compartment. Here are some pics of a friend of mine's M4...

#4 you can see the motor number... it's on a white sticker behind a coolant hose...
IF you PM me your VIN... I can have my friend's at BMW AG look up your motor number.
