That's because a 911 is built as a sports car from the group up - from a base car to the GT3-RS. They are true sports cars.
The M4 GTS on the other hand....well, began life as a 4 series - which is a very nice and sporty luxury car. But isn't a sports car.
I think BMW could make a competitor of the 911/R8, etc. with the i8, if they wanted to do so. All the hypercars have moved to a hybrid type of setup, and the combination will keep trickling down. But maximizing that tech in a halo car? Just doesn't seem like BMW is interested...
