I am just an objective reader and what I read didn't indicate rudeness; it indicated arrogance. The two may seem like they are the same things, but they are not. Rudeness pertains to being ill-mannered and willfully offensive. Arrogance pertains to one's own pride and condescension toward others. One can be rude and arrogant, but one can also be arrogant and not rude. Based solely on the OP's text, the latter seems to be what Gary was.

All the best.
