Opinions wanted on Calichase's next fun car

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So my current stable contains ...

2007 BMW z4m coupe (track friendly)
2008 Prius (daily beater)
1973 de tomaso pantera (project car/ something to always wrench on)

I would like to have a daily beater, a track friendly car, and a fun street car in addition to the pantera which is always a project.

So what I am looking for is a modifiable car that will be only used for street driving. I have considered a lot and really what I have come down to is the following, which could not be more opposite.

-997.1 turbo (probably looking at a 6mt 2009 sport chrono, sport seats, LSD , which is the last year made and most sought after of the generation) would want it white with pccbs, cf interior trim and sills on black. Probably could get one with a few miles (40ish) for 70-75k. Would do a few bolt ons ($15k all together maybe over a few years, fabspeed exhaust, Cobb/ ptf tune, run e85, intercoolers, kW coilovers and camber plates, boost recirculation valves, and some meaty tires (255f 345mm rears!!) on a set of hre's. Make 530-580whp easily, and 500 ft lbs. lots of room to upgrade with bigger turbos, etc.

-other option is a late year c6 z06. Possibly 2011-13. Would want the z07 package, and the carbon package and similar miles (40k ish) and prefer black. Now the c6 z06 really ranges in price, mid to high 30s for a early c6 (2007-08) or mid 50s to 60s for a later well optioned model. I would spend maybe 10k on mods over a few years, meaty tires on either hre's or ccws, coilovers, and do something along the lines of an lpe 660 package with heads/cams/intake/headers/tune and make about 50-550 whp and 500 ft lbs on 93. Would love to do Loma wide body flares and rockers too.

Now I have never been a domestic car person, but I do have respect for the corvette and it's tuning abilities. Investment wise, a well optioned late model, z06 will probably still depreciate some before settling out, however I think the turbo is at its bottom dollar currently and will begin to rise (manual with mezger will be somewhat valuable some day)

I may throw a blower on the m coupe in the future (ttfs prima plus) but I know that no matter what I do I will never get this level of performance out of the m coupe with out sacrificing major drivability. I see the m coupe as a forever car (unless I replace it with a .2gt3 rs) and it incredible balanced power wise with current power (307/270 to the wheels)

So of these two options what does everyone think? I'm leaning towards the turbo but giving the z06 a fair chance.

Ain't to replacement for displacement, all 7L of it that is...

The only other car I can think of that would be modifiable with big power would be an E55AMG W211.

Are you able to drop the motor on the 997 yourself ?

If you want to mod or track it, the Z06 will be way easier on the wallet and easier to work on. It is also a lot cheaper to make big power with it. Obviously it isn't as exclusive as a 911 Turbo but it's not an apples to apples comparison either, since the Z06 is a much less expensive car.

And if 75k is okay with a 911, why not just score a new Z06 instead?

C6 ZR1 - Easy to modify / CCB / lower end of your budget / monster horsepower and handling...

Add some carvaggio seats and you have a beauty!

I seem to recall most drivers were faster in the Z06, even though it had less HP than the ZR1. The ZR1 was a little too nuts for most to control and have fun with.

already have too much tied up in the coupe and know it so well. Good thought though.

I'm a bit surprised by the verdict of c6z. Certainly the better value and all around better car. Easier to upgrade and what not.

C7 z06 was an interesting comment. Extremely impressive for sure. I need and I believe a well optioned z07 (what I would rather have) is high 90s and even over 100k.

The c6 z07 with carbon package is basically a zr1 without the ls9 and replaced with the ls7. So with a few mods in the ls7 it would be equivalent or even superior to a stock zr1. And I think I would want to stay NA if I went the corvette route.

When a C6 is set up right, it is an absolute track weapon. Would not want to drive it much on the street though.

Honestly, I would rather have a new C7 Z51 than an old C6 Z06.

OP your Z4M looks great!

I know you want us to pick between the two options but what about a GT-R? Can pick up a 2013-2014 for the price of a 997.1 Turbo and they are absolute monsters, especially once you start modding.

If not GTR I say C6Z

LS9 was overbuilt for its application and is extremely reliable. Some would say more reliable than an LS7. I wouldn't say its more uncontrollable than a H/C/I LS7 Z06 though.

Agreed. Plus, the ones OP are looking at have the mag ride which make them significantly more of a dual personality type of car.

The price point of the Z06 is hard to ignore. As much as I like the 997.1, I'd probably go the route of the Z07.

I grew up in Queenstown and either would really be great on some of the back roads. Just make sure to watch out for the QAC cops!

Where in queenstown? Bennett Point by chance? I grew up and live in Prospect Bay currently. I will tell you though, and I'm sure you know, as soon as you get off the bridge you enter the tightest police jurisdiction in the state. I have had my issues over the years over silly things. The local sheriffs have been great to me though.

If the "work on it" part is important to yo, then get the Pantera! It'll keep yo busy like no other car lol.

The difference is, the Pantera is WAY cooler than any of your other cars listed. It's a rarity, and turns heads and gets comments and thumbs-up everywhere you go. MUCH more enjoyable to own and drive (when it's running).

I got mine dialed in pretty good, and there's nothing else like it!
