TPMS required on all 4 aftermarket rims?
Did my search but most results were for 5er and 3er and not for F01/02.
I know many of you have already switch to different aftermarket rims already. All look good and well. But never mentioned (or I missed it) about installing TPMS on the inside of the wheels. Reason for asking: A shop said all BMW from 2009+ does not have the TPMS on the wheel but on the car itself. I kinda doubt what he claimed so just want to make sure from you guys. FYI: Asia right hand drive car, Hong Kong to be exact. Some suggest only US cars have them. Still in the process of deciding which rims to get and wonder if I need TPMS or not. Thanks!

In the UK market the tyre "pressures" are calculated from the rolling circumference of the wheel rather than from a sensor in the wheel. Not sure about your part of the world though.

Fastbuck: Thanks for your input. Judging from the cap of the TPMS, I think I have the same system as UK or yours at least. I have seen other 7 on this forum that their cap uses the TPMS cap that reads TPM or similar.
Rather mine is just a regular cap (at least to my view). Hope you guys can see from the picture I attached here. This should be the "non-TPMS in the wheel" right?

How does the car pull off this calculation? How does it know how much tread is worn off the tire? Many factors come into play to reverse calculate an easy direct reading.

There are no more TPMS modules installed inside of the wheels from 2009+. Actually, I couldn't find the TPMS modules on my 2007 E90. Tire pressure is now monitor by a sensor mount in the car. Dealer told me they are infrad sensors, but I am not too sure about that.
Hope this helps. |

AFAIK, only US market models have the TPMS as it is mandated by the US government that all new vehicles have this system. In fact the system based on tire rotation is no longer allowed in the US (well at least that is what I have been told by BMW). The rest of the world doesn't seem to get the TPMS systems and quite frankly seeing as there have been recent reports that cars can be identified a good block or more away by the signals these TPMS units transmit, and the security risk they pose, I am glad my car doesn't have them. One of the reports indicates that the TPMS system in the car does not use any kind of encryption and hence hackers can fool the system to think the tires are low on pressure. On an even more sinister note, the security expert that wrote the report indicated that it is also possible to hack into the car's network via the TPMS receiver and cause other nasty situations, e.g. turn the engine off, shift gears, apply brakes, etc. and all of this via wireless communication! The easy fix would be to encrypt the communication between the TPMS transmitter in the tire and the receiver in the car.
Anyway, it's a bit off-topic but I thought this is something worthwhile mentioning!

Thanks xDrive50i & kfiend!!!
From playing around my tire, I believe mine is a non-TPMS wheel. Will go ahead with new rims without TPMS installed. Thanks for the input guys!

As far as I recall it is an off-shoot of the ABS sensor function. I guess it'll work on a relativity basis rather than a finite measurement down to the last micron.

kfiend:
First of all, damn nice ride with your new F10 AW 550i. Your Breytons are 20's or 19's just curious? At first I wanted to try Breytons as well, but Photoshop outcome was not good and didn't fit the car's style. Received quotes from HRE and ADV1 wheels, mono-block and forged rims is what I want. Still debating on OEM wheels since they are only HK$49,000 from BMWHK WITH run flat tires @ 21". Comparing to forged rims that are $60,000-$90,000 for rims only 20".
