Excessive heat with i7 Pano glass roof
We have had four iX with panoramic glass roofs, and almost no heat radiated down into the cabin & on your head.
Regardless if the power retractable, cloth pano glass cover is open or closed in my i7, the amount of heat is just awful (like Tesla awful). It is only 80F here today, and my i7 was parked in the sun for about 45 mins. I even used the app and did pre-climate Air Con. about 10-12 mins before driving...and when I got into the car, the heat radiating down onto my head was truly awful. I cannot imagine how this will feel when we hit 110F!! Anyone else suffering? We tinted the pano glass roof in our Model Y and both Taycans. Think this would help in the i7? Will this "ruin" the nighttime LED colours? Last edited by deutsch100; 04-17-2024 at 06:23 PM.. |

Have ceramic IR rejecting film installed. Doesn't have to be dark tinted, shouldn't impact the lighting at all
My guess is your iXs had IR rejecting climate comfort glass and your i7 doesn't. My S560 has this glass and the difference in heat rejection is significant. |

Can't tolerate the heat anymore. As I type this, my glass pano roof is being tinted with 35% 3M High Performance Ceramic Tint.
Fingers crossed Our tinting guy says this is what they use for all Tesla, Taycan and other glass pano roofs, and heat is drastically reduced. |

I did 35%, so the sky lounge LEDs can still be seen at night, but they are not as vibrant/bright. To me, this is so worth it.
I rarely drive at night, and when I do I cannot look up and enjoy the glass LED lighting whilst driving anyway We have been using the same tinting place for years & years. Normally they charge, he said about $300, but he did it for $150. So, so amazing. |

Just FYI to those who want to do this, with ceramic tint the tint can be very light and still have similar heat rejection, even if you tinted at 70% which is basically clear you will get great heat rejection and your sky lounge roof shouldnt be affected...

Actually I wanted 20% or even "limo" 5% tint, but he said I would lose almost all the sky lounge lighting. |

from what i read, the "stuff" is applied on the inside? is this ceramic thing not a foil? and: like this, the IR has to pass the glass twice, still heating it up... i'm confused and ask for enlightment |

I just ordered a new I7 and lament these glass roofs. Why they cannot be optional, with either a solid steel roof or one with a moonroof as standard equipment is just beyond me.
I’m going BMW for the first time since 1995, having driven MB S Class sedans for the last several years and had to put up with the glass roofs there as well. That said, at least the MB’s had a very substantial sunshade that sealed off most all of the heat. I feel as though these glass roofs are a fad and I hope they fade away soon, but I’m not holding my breath. |

Outside the USA you can order the iX and I-Pace without the lame glass pano roof. Porsche Taycan allows USA buyers to order without. I do not understand why iX and i7 make this standard. BMW allows the new 5 Series to come with or without. The glass roofs are hot, heavy, expensive and if they need to be replaced, I know the iX is near $20k and weeks and weeks of work. Our XM and son's M3 have the solid carbon fiber roof (as did our B8) and it is so much better than these awful glass roofs. The solid carbon fiber roof is infinitely cooler and cooler |
