For sure, I should be headed towards my moms house sunday night overlooking Lake Huron, so if it's a clear night, should be a good opportunity for the lights. Might be lucky enough to see some reds. Time will tell.

And lesson learned. Should only have to learn it a few more times before I stop not making that mistake anymore.

Red-tail takes off against a dark blue Colorado sky:

Red-tail hawk launches against blue sky by dcstep, on Flickr

These lighting conditions are hard to beat. I had snow on the ground, reflecting up under the wings and into the eye, sun at my back and an incredible morning blue sky, typical here in Colorado.

Canon 7D, EF 500mm f/4L IS, ISO 800, f/9, +1EV, resulting in 1/1250-sec.

wow....

close overhead?

amazing what the snow on the ground can do with the lighting!!!

I'm thinking I might be road tripping to Colorado soon. I need to get out of Ontario. My dad is headed back to CO soon too, so I'll have a place to stay and explore from there.

Nice shots, Bill and Dave. Two examples of superb lighting.

Reasonably close, but that's a 500mm lens on a 1.6X crop sensor, so he's probably 30-ft up and I'm 40-ft from the tree. In fact, after a 20-min wait, I decided to get closer and that spooked it.

I know that you said, but I've forgotten, where is your dad's place. If it's anywhere near Denver we could go shooting together and you could experience my M3 shooting blind.

Nice shots Cooh23, but I think that I like the first best.

Is the last a crop, or is that with a super-tele?

1st shot is best of 3 but I'd prefer more sky in it and a 1/3rd frame ratio chop on the trees

His place is in Ft. Collins. Not far from you. I would definitely got for the chance to watch you shoot. I love learning.

And as long as your tires are better then the ones I have on my 1 series, I'm in I don't think my tires can handle my torque when the chip is engaged. I've gotten wheel spin in 3rd entering an onramp... hooray for traction control when you aren't paying attention!!!

I'd probably work my way over to the dunes and (I think it's) Gods Garden as well.
