1955 Ferrari 375 Plus Cabriolet

The 375 was a 4.5 liter V-12; The 375 Plus took this to 5.0 liters. I also think this was the car commissioned for King Leopold of Belgium, who was a noted Ferrari connoisseur. This car is a one-off and was the type of car that would only be undertaken for royalty or particularly favored customers by Enzo Ferrari.

In Studebaker's final years, they came out with some interesting cars and engineering, such as the Avanti and the supercharged engines.

This Lark Eight Daytona Convertible has a supercharged R2 4.7-liter V-8 engine with 289 horsepower. 1 of 31 built in 1963.

Here's a body style -- the town car -- that is long obsolete. The chauffeur is in the elements whilst the gentleman and lady are all cozy inside. Note the auxiliary fender to keep the coach door clean.

One more Duesenberg -- this one's another 1931, but a Model J Murphy roadster with rumble seat -- in use.

And here are some specs: 6.9 liter 32-valve inline-8 with 265 hp, 3-speed manual, list price new $18,000 -- which I suspect would buy a very comfortable house in 1931!

Per the MG Registry, this is the first MG sold in the USA. A 1929 MG M. I think the M stood for Midget and in this case it was definitely true: The MG M had a curb weight of 1100 pounds and was powered by an 850 cc engine of 20 horsepower.

This one brings back some memories for me. Around 1963 or so, my grandfather decided to buy a used late-model Imperial sedan. I imagine that an early 1960s Imperial was the origin of the old saying that "the more stuff you put on the car, the more there is to go wrong," although I was not specifically aware of any problems he had with the car.

In 1965 I graduated from high school on base in the Philippines. I decided to attend the University of Texas at El Paso; my military Dad was a Texas resident so I paid in-state tuition and my grandparents lived in El Paso. Fast-forward to December of 1965 and I had spent my Christmas vacation in the Philippines -- a slightly dicey proposition as I was flying space-available on military transports. My grandparents had driven to the LA area to catch a ship to sail to the Philippines to visit my family -- but my grandfather had suffered a last-minute fall and broken his leg so was in a full cast and they had cancelled the trip. My grandmother apparently did not feel up to the thousand-mile car drive home. Ah, but 18-year-old Llarry with his relatively new driver's license is coming back from the Philippines and can drive. Perfect!

Unlike my father and I, my (beloved) grandfather was a bit of a crotchety old man. The trip started well enough, with Grandad in the back seat, casted leg splayed out and doing the expected bit of backseat driving. But then we got out of SoCal sprawl and onto the open road. I knew how to drive on the open interstate: Keep right except to pass. Grandad felt otherwise: Stay in the left lane no matter what and if faster traffic wants to pass, they can go around on the right.

I kept moving into the slow lane to allow faster cars to pass; he didn't catch me every time but when he did there was hell to pay. "Didn't I tell you to stay in the left lane no matter what?!"

We survived the trip with much grumbling and gnashing of teeth.

My Grandad actually bought a second Imperial to replace the first after a few years. Both purchased used.

Imperials all had the MoPar 413 cubic inch V-8 with 350 hp and power everything. The '60 convertible as pictured listed for $5,774 new. No doubt well over 6K with options. The tail fins on the '60 are what took me back; I'm pretty sure my grandparents' had those same fins.

Offhand I don't believe I've seen a two-seat Rolls-Royce of this vintage before. Of course, with custom coachwork you can do whatever you like.

1950 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith

Particularly well-suited for those who like big butts.

Willamette Street, Eugene, Oregon. March 29, 1956.

The sign on the left said "First National Bank" and below that, "Eugene".

Most of the cars were mid-50's vintage or older.

That gave me a potential city and time frame.

From there, I searched for pictures of Eugene's Main Street in the 1950's.

Eventually, I found a couple that matched with the signs on the parade route (look at the "Heilig" sign in the back of the pictures and "Stanley's Del-Ray Restaurant") and the hill at the very end of the street. That confirmed the location and the city.

Next, I cross-indexed a list of the cities that the Futurliners visited from 1953-1956.

The only time the Futurliners were in Eugene, Oregon was on March 29, 1956. They stayed at the Eugene Hotel and put on the display at the University of Oregon campus.

My Search-Fu was strong tonight.

R.

Well, damn son. Nice job. Right in my backyard. I zoomed in, but I couldn't quite make out Eugene under the bank sign. The kicker, tho, was the big "O" on the hillside in the distance. Duh.

I was thinking 1955 based on the yellow Ford at the front of the line.

Such a cool pic.

The last Rolls-Royce model that could be coach-built with a custom body was the 1962-66 Silver Cloud III. Here's a 1963 example of a drophead coupe (convertible) by H.J. Mulliner on the Cloud III chassis, along with a dash photo of an earlier car.

2,044 Silver Cloud III cars were built from 1962 to 1966. They had a 6.2 liter V-8 of about 200 horsepower, though I recollect that Rolls-Royce refused to quote power figures, instead stating that the power was "adequate."
