BMW ActiveHybrid 7 Qualifies For $900 Tax Credit

The Internal Revenue Service today certified that the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 qualifies for up to a $900 tax credit under the Alternative Motor Vehicle provision. This serves as yet another endorsement for the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy.

The ActiveHybrid 7 combines an electric motor with BMW’s much-praised 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and new 8-speed automatic transmission to accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds while delivering impressive EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, a near 18 percent improvement over the non-hybrid 750i/Li. The ActiveHybrid 7 features Engine Start/Stop to avoid wasteful engine idling in stop-and-go driving and at traffic lights. The powerful lithium-ion battery enables systems like the radio, Bluetooth phone connection and air-conditioning to continue running when the engine is off. Its compact size minimizes the impact on luggage capacity.

The standard and long-wheelbase versions of the ActiveHybrid 7 become the fourth and fifth BMW models to qualify for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit, joining the ActiveHybrid X6 and BMW’s Advanced Diesel 335d Sedan and X5 xDrive35d.

Seems pointless to me.

Hybrid to save gas and thus more CO2 from being put out into the environment, but then has lithium ion batteries which are terrible for the environment.

Stupid.... Just make a diesel.

It has been observed that the simplest solution to a problem is invariably the correct one. To give a tax credit to a hybrid car for violating this commonsense principle makes William of Occam laugh.

Good for BMW for offering the hybrid 7 series that is oh about 30 thousand dollars cheaper than the 12 cylinder 760Li and has a 0-60 MPH within .1 seconds (4.7 vs. 4.6)!

Oh it gets much better mileage too, which isn't bad considering the Gulf of Mexico is completely polluted with oil these days. I do enjoy my petroleum based beemers but I am really looking forward to an affordable hybrid BMW or even better an electric one.

Cheers!

It's about the experience... not economy.

Those of you laughing at the tax credit are justified. It's laughable that anyone who can afford the $100K car would even need such a credit.

However, the MPG increase is substantial and, in my opinion, worth the extra dosh. My V8 gets 14 city 20 highway. I drive 45 miles (each way) to work every day. I don't care about the cost to fill up my beast -- indeed the price is high, but the car truly feeds my soul, so I don't care how much I spend to feed her.

What I DO care about is my time. Having to fill my gas tank every two or three days sucks. The ActiveHybrid 7 posts V6 MPG numbers, but has a powerful and silky-smooth no-apologies V8 under the hood which will require less frequent trips to the pump to feed.

Well worth the extra money in my opinion. A no compromises BMW V8 with the efficiency of a V6. Brilliant.

more and more hybrids are getting tax incentives worlwide, not just in the US. In some countries where import duties exceed 100%, they have a reduced tariff like 15%, so this is a real advantage.

Agreed, but people buy them. My neighbor has an LS600h... like $30,000 more and 1 MPG better. Pointless.
