That engine upon introduction was an absolute masterpiece. Getting 100+ HP/Liter was amazing. No less than six E46 M3's have passed through my family. There's a reason for that, and the S54 has a lot to do with it.

Absolutely. Hell even to this day, I still consider this one of the best BMW engines ever made, right up there with the S65 and S85

I absolutely love the S54 in my Z4MC. It's a (nearly) perfect engine.

Now I know who's responsible for not torquing down the VANOS hub bolts. I'm coming for you, Klaus.

Great find - thanks for the video! I wish there was more of this type of quality content instead of who's got the most stick-on carbon fiber parts from some hack vendor/sponsor.

Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of a watch being put together.
Hopefully get to drive that engine sometime.

Lovely engine but needed to have a a few problems solved, vanos and rod bearings on certain years. I loved the engine, it was insane, marvelous... how much power, torque, the sound... but then it really wasn't all that reliable.

My vanos failed while in the canyons of Los Angeles. The above picture is during the 3 weeks it took me to replace the engine myself with the help of a friend... my mechanical experience comes mostly from this car and all the work I did / had to do to it.

What an experience and what a feeling to have owned one of your dream cars!
