Amen. I'd have to lease one at best. The price point makes me pray for a younger brother for both Boxster & Cayman. I guess they axed that idea, giving the 718 name away to the brothers instead.

Actually, the car doesn't look all that different to me than the current Z4. Yes, I know, it has a soft top, but besides that? Is that body cladding behind the front wheels or a "breather hole" like in the new 5 series?
That's actually not a bad thing, IMHO. I do like the exterior of the current Z4 a lot. If there are only evolutionary design changes (just like with the 5 series), that's not necessarily a bad thing. |

Hopefully it'll also be lightweight and handles like its on rails. The 2nd gen Z4 departed from the formula that made the first Z4 and Z3 so successful: compact, lightweight, relatively cheap, soft top, and true driver's car. 2nd gen Z4 get got bloated, expensive, and numb; and corporate wonders why nobody bought them? You ditched your customer base for your roadsters idiots.

The looks will be sweet I'm sure.
What's underneath not so much I'm expecting. Bmw should have gone to a smaller roadster like the z3. They are operating under this weird idea that it's ok to make the cars bigger and bigger as long as they lose weight to compensate. A stupid idea surely being pushed by marketers who totally miss what's between the lines. Roadsters are completely all about the drive, image and fun. Bmw is thinking like Toyota too much Unfortunatly this car will likely not do well even if it's weights 1lb. They are just not thinking the right way right now for this type of car. Their thinking works better for a generic Camry type of car.

Z5 will be the larger one. Against F Type and 911?
Z3 will be the lightest and hope RWD. Should be against TT and Boxster 😉 Can't wait to see some really driver focused products!🏎 |

Read somewhere that with the arrival of 8, the 6 will become a little more sporty and smaller to compete against the 911. |

For comparison, the first z4 (and 3L z3's) only weighed ~2900lbs (dry). Thats what makes them such fun cars. With technology progressing (lightweight materials and production techniques over a 15 year timespan none the less), anything above that I would consider a failure.

I believe awhile ago, Scott has said the new Z5 will be aimed at the F-Type. And than in an interview with EVO; Toyota's chief engineer has hinted their version has its eyes set on the Cayman.
Now rumor mill time. Online rumors are saying there will be a smaller Z3 after the launch of the Z5. It will be built on a shorten Z5 chassis. Toyota may also use this for a second gen 86. And the smallest Z1 is said to be built on the modular platform UKL1. Perhaps a reskin MINI Superleggera? Rumors are also saying with a larger new 8 that the next gen 6 will be smaller and lighter, think 911 fighter. |

For bmw this is a bad market segment in these days. I dont see them expanding this.
