Lets brainstorm my next daily driver...
so my electric smart car lease is up in july. i love the damn car, but i'm trying to negotiate the same deal ($1k down, $86/mo, 10k miles, 36mo) and they are playing hardball and don't want to do the same deal.
that said, i'm looking at a lot of things and have an open mind. my needs- reliable, cheap, fun. i've grown fond of the weirdness of the smart car. i'm looking at pre-'97 diesels, pre-'75 economy cars, electric (my commute is 45 miles). no motorcycles. a toyota 22re pickup seems appealing. also saw a bmw 524 turbo diesel ( https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...462277548.html ), although i would imagine finding parts would be a nightmare. lets have fun. one disqualifier- it can't leak.

i'd want an enclosed cab for the two days out of the year it rains here.
speaking of three wheelers, i have been keeping an eye on the elio. its an enclosed three wheeler that is technically a motorcycle. supposed to be $8k and get 80mpg. https://www.eliomotors.com/about-elio/

I think that company is taking a dump though... the Facebook updates and press releases are getting fewer and fewer.

Morgan 3 Wheeler.
It has a "roof/hood" that probably only takes forty minutes to erect and will fly off at 41mph. |

Cheaply made by drunken Brits doesn't count?
One of my neighbors has a whole fleet of stupid BMW C1's. Not sure if they're legal here, or why you'd want one, but it is a moped with a hat. [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by mkoesel; 02-14-2018 at 10:15 AM.. Reason: Embedded Image Issue |

If you like quirky, maybe a Honda CR-Z? They used value is terrible, can pick them up cheap.

My DD is a 2001 Toyota Camry manual. Super reliable, tons of room inside, good MPG, and the manual is quite fun. It has 270K miles and still going strong.
HERE is a clean one for only $2,200. |

How bout a first gen high mileage S2k?
The S2000 can be a cheap commuter and cheap track car at the same time. Anyhow, I’m in the same boat too... my Chevy Spark EV lease is up in 2 months and am also looking at different commuter cars to replace it for my 25 mile each way commute. Similar criteria as you, EV, and cheaper to commute in than either my M3 or FJ (when you factor in gas, toll roads, maintenance, depreciation). However I need some kind of semi autonomous driving features cause even with HOV access I’m only going 5 mph. Rather than lease my next commuter car I might just buy a Honda Clarity PHEV and just drive it to the ground... you can get a top of the line Touring model for $25k to $26k after your $7500 fed rebate + $450 SCE rebate + ($2500 state rebate if your income qualifies it)... and it’s a Honda so you know it will be a very very very long time to drive it to the ground. I doubt the Elio will ever make it to production. Elio (the owner) decided to make his own engine, which probably killed the company. He's even farther behind Tesla with the Model 3.
