Advice on job offer
Hey guys, I just received a job offer yesterday and was hoping you could lend some advice on whether I should accept or not. I'll first list my current role, salary, etc followed by the new job:
Current Role Senior Systems Analyst (6 years at company, healthcare industry) Salary - 75k + 5% yearly bonus 401k - Company matches 4 of the first 6 percent Potential Role Systems Engineer (biopharma industry) Salary - 90k + 7% yearly bonus 401k - Company matches 150 percent of the first 6 percent (so if I put in 6 percent, they would put in 9) ------------------------------- The commute for both is about the same for both and the new job is also in a newly renovated office. I know the numbers (and my wife) say that it's a no-brainer, but the comfortability factor with my current job is what I think about. That being said, my current company was bought out about three months ago, and although I'm in no immediate danger, that factors in as well. Thank you for the help Last edited by z335is; 04-21-2015 at 08:01 AM.. |

Guess it really boils down to how happy you are in your current situation. It seems like you like the comfortability, but are you willing to sacrifice that and work more to earn more? I'd also factor in your company being bought out, while not an immediate threat, or even one in the long run, I'd rather go somewhere I know is going to be secure.
I'd say go for it. If I had a chance to move up under those circumstances, I would. |

What is it about the comfort factor that is holding you back? By the numbers, it's a clear no brainer. Look within yourself to see what it is that's really holding you back. If it doesn't serve you, there's no sense in letting it continue to hold you back.

So yeah, don't let fear stop you. Get out of your comfort zone and go for it. |

We need more info. What's the commute like for both options for a start? What would the hours be like? Are you the primary income earner in the household? What's the tax rate?
All these things matter. i have an opportunity to make about $20K more elsewhere but my commute would be 40 instead of 10 minutes each way, hours would be longer and i would have much less freedom. I pick up and drop off my son at day care and my wife earns more than i do so i will likely stay where i am. Also, by the time that 20K is taxed i am left with $11K ... soooo ... |

So on the salary alone he'll get an additional $11.2 after tax. Factor in the the $5.1k difference in the 401k contribution (which is free money) and the extra $2.5k in bonus (pre-tax) and he'll be netting almost $19k more a year. That's a massive bump and would probably take years to get anything remotely close to that at his current role assuming he even has a job left after the acquisition gets fully integrated. OP, if your only hold up is comfort, forget about that. You were able to get comfortable in your current job, you'll be able to do the same in the new one.

This forum has a wealth of people from many different social stratas / walks of life, and I've always found their advice to be a great resource from which to pull from. Sorry you disagree with that though. |

I've had offers of 20k or more to switch jobs. But the current job I'm at offers WFH 2 days a week. And easy hours. I will be moving regardless since I am relatively young and don't want to get suck in one place anytime soon.
FYI I work in the same industry (healthcare IT/Analytics), making a similar amount, in a city that costs 23% less to live in. In my opinion you are underpaid.

Also, work from home is WHERE IT'S AT!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been doing more and more work from home, and it looks like soon I'll be making the jump full time. I've been working remotely part time for years, and it looks like FINALLY I might be lucky enough to do it full time. I cannot relate to you how happy this makes me feel. No commute, no shitty backstabbing coworkers, no restrooms that smell like a zoo after some overweight punk leaves a 10lb turd in the bowl, no gotta be there when they want you to be there, NO MORE BULLSHIT!! WORK FROM HOME FOR THE MUTHAF****IN WIN! |
