New NY Window Tint Regulations!?

Note the following:

http://abc7ny.com/politics/mayor-pol...lives/1621088/

Current NY window tint law requires the front two side windows to allow 70% of light through, but some articles regarding the new regulations reference that windows must not be tinted darker than 30%.

Please tell me the articles truly mean 30% and are not getting confused with the law requiring at least 70% of the light to pass.

Anyone able to find a copy of the proposed law?

Thanks.

Found the Bill: http://nyassembly.gov/leg/?default_f...&Memo=Y&Text=Y

Unfortunately, seems that windows allowing less than 70% of light through will fail inspection.

Its not really a change to existing law - it would require a window tint test during annual inspection. NY law requires 70% of light to pass through the front passenger windows. Not 30%.

Thanks for the clarification, but I already understood this. What I wasn't clear on, however, was whether the Bill would somehow allow inspection shops to pass vehicles with 30% tint even though the actual underlying law makes anything darker than 70% illegal, several articles referencing 30% when they should have referenced 70%.

Would suck if this passes. There's certainly levels of tint darker than 70% that would balance officer safety with vehicle privacy, 50% being reasonable.

Would not pass inspection if tint is darker than 70%. I agree with your concerns. Here's a link to the bill: http://nyassembly.gov/leg/?default_f...&Memo=Y&Text=Y.

DeFrancisco is the sponsor in Senate. He has a lot of juice, and it sounds like NYC is pushing as well. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Oh boy; thanks for this info as well!

Not good; wonder how we'll be able to get around.

Think inspection facilities will be willing to look the other way?

Prob not.

Instead of this, the law should be that when pulled over, you have to turn on your emergency hazard lights, shut down your engine and roll down all windows, weather permitting; it’s what I do, and instruction to do so can be conveyed by the officer to the driver via loudspeaker, need be. I’m likely asking for too much though, and the people this Bill is to protect against wouldn't follow same anyway.

Same thing we have always done. Find an inspector willing to ignore it. Whether it's an emissions test or tint, there is an inspection shop that will ignore it.

Sure hope they won't mind taking the risk.

Wonder what dealers are going to do now.

Guess they won't care either?

dealers will enforce it. As far as the inspectors are concerned, you got it tinted the day after they inspected it. Most wont operate that way, but if you are lucky you can find one that will.
