Teenager's First Car?

My daughter just got her learner's permit so it was time to look for a car for her. My son already has my 2000 Celica. We originally were looking for a $5000 car, but my wife wanted something that would last my daughter through college. She also wanted my daughter to learn on the car she would drive the most. We narrowed the search down to the Corolla and Mazda 3. We ended up buying her a 2016 Mazda 3 with 65,000 miles (ex-rental car). I wanted to get her one with a M/T but she has some issues with her left knee which required the purchase to be an A/T.

I know there are some who will not purchase a teenager a car and have them get one on their own. I have nothing but respect for that approach. However, in our situation that was not an option.

My question to all of you is what did you get your teenage son/daughter as their first car?

Love Mazdas. We gave our daughter our 2010 Mazda CX-9 with 150K. Most economical option for us rather than selling it and buying a newer used car with less miles (plus handy to have a big 3-row big car for hauling stuff).

They won't know a good car without experiencing a few bad ones. My son got:
150k mile box Cherokee
10 yr old Subie
'03 330xi

Now he drives his own E46 M3.

I bought my son a Mazda3 a couple of years ago and it’s been great. Bulletproof reliability, averages over 30 mpg, and pretty nice driving dynamics. The only other choice I was looking at was the Civic.

I think that's a great 1st car. I'm in the school of thought that teenagers should be focused on their studies, not working to make their payments. I've seen too many friends back in high school saddle themselves with paying for their car and their mods to the point where they sidelined academics.

Anyway, my son is too young to drive. I did purchase a 2013 Honda Civic for my little sister. It does the job just fine. Nothing fancy.

First car for our son was a 5 year old Acura TL. Told him we'd buy him 1 car, after that he was on his own. He totaled it 2 years later. When he got his license back, about another 2 years later, we used the insurance settlement for the TL to buy an 8 year old Nissan Frontier pick up, which he's still driving 5 years later.

I always suggest to my clients to make sure they run it through the IIHS.ORG crash test site and watch some of the videos while choosing.

They also have a good teen driving video too...

Mazda 3 does great.

I wish I had you guys for parents. This is what I had as my first car in high school, while my friends were driving GTOs, Mustangs, Baracudas, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Dauphine

The Dauphine had a water-cooled Ventoux engine with capacity 845 cc and 32 hp (14–24 kW). According to Road & Track, the Dauphine accelerated from 0–110 km/h (0–68 mph) in 32 seconds. Engine cooling was facilitated by air intakes behind each rear door and a vented rear fascia. Top speed was about 70mph (downhill with a tail wind).

I came out from school one day and some guys had picked it up and put it on the sidewalk.
