Flu Shot

So a lot of folks around the office are out sick. Most of them got the flu shot and got sick. I myself didn't get it this year and I'm perfectly fine. Looks like the flu shot is creating a flu season, maybe these people wouldn't be sick if they didn't get a dead virus injected into them.

I got the flu shot and I'm fine. The flu shot may not be effective in preventing you from getting the flu (and effectiveness changes each year based in the strain they guess when prepping the shot vs. what actually circulates) but you don't get the flu from getting a flu shot. I've gotten a shot each year for the last 10+ years and haven't gotten the flu any year I got the shot. I started getting the flu shot after skipping it and getting the flu one year a long time ago. That's a way to learn to get the flu shot.

This year's shot is only 10% effective vs the dominant strain. I have gotten a shot for years as I think some protection is better than nothing.

It doesn't work like that.

Literally impossible to get the flu from the flu shot.

You have an office full of hypochondriacs

I used to never get the flu shot and I feel I get sick more often when I get it than when I don't.

If true, it is a coincidence. No basis to conclude you get sick more often from getting a flu shot. It is just a common excuse people use to not get one.

Getting sick is not getting the flu. I assume by "getting sick" you mean you feel under the weather, perhaps a head cold or a chest cold, yes?

Getting sick in winter can come from numerous factors including but not limited to: weather, exposure to sick people, immune system compromises, age, exercise, diet, allergies, etc.

If you are getting sick more often now than you used to, I'd start by looking at those factors and see what's changed.

I'm in a high risk group (insulin-dependent diabetes) but still don't get one. Years ago, got the "vaccine" 2 years in a row. Still later got the flu. One year ended up in ER because of vomiting and dehydration. Risk/reward wasn't there for me. Plus I'm allergic to needles (diabetic humor)

These days regular courses of vitamin C, plus supplemental herbal infusions during peak flu season have kept me relatively free of active infection. Plus, like last week when the wife was very sick, I slept in another room for a few days.

It takes the flu shot about 3 weeks before it starts working, so you can get the flu after you get the shot, but before it starts covering you.

I've done that in extreme cases where I need to be well, but otherwise continue to sleep in the same bed.

But, and you reminded me of something I did when we were first married, on our honeymoon, we were in St. Lucia and my wife got sick pretty much the day we were to fly there. So she was in rough shape, and here I am in the tropics wanting to enjoy myself and not get sick...but its our honeymoon and we're obviously sharing a bed.

So I built a little pillow wall in between us in an attempt to ward off getting sick. On our honeymoon.

I'm still not sure I'm out of the doghouse completely for that one.

But I didn't get sick.

I've never gotten a flu shot. I'm sure I've gotten the flu, but in at least the past decade it's never had me down and out for more than a couple of days.

My personal experience is that i would have the flu 1 week out of the year for about 50% of the years prior to getting the flu shot.

The year i got the flu shot, i had the flu 4 times.

I have not had a flu shot since then and neither have i had the flu.

Clearly, you get the flu shot and get the flu several times shortly there after. Then, you are immune for life. - Abraham Lincoln

Got my anual flushot every year around end of october, thats quite enough time to let the dead viruses been implemented into the system.
My company sponsores this (and other shots) which are also necessary to for work.

You had 4 different strains of flu? You get immunity each time you get that strain of virus. Maybe you were just sick?

This isn't how science works. The flu shot being less effective this year is because the strains that are circulating are different than what was predicted earlier in the season.

Vaccines work for the most part. This is medical science. You are more likely to be protected than without, but it's not necessarily 100% protection.
