I always get a kick out of it when people who didn't come from a horrible situation talk about how easy it is to throw all that aside and succeed in life. A lot of the kids I deal with daily (Adolescent and child Psychiatry) are brought in very dismal situations with idiots for parents (or foster parents who just care about getting paid) with no structure at all. The deck is stacked against them from the day they are born. Sure on some very rare occasions a kid makes it and breaks the cycle but after 15 years I can count on my hands how many kids that is.

There are a lot of reasons why this is the case and the fact that people are talking about it is good overall I think. The fact that people are upset with kap is ridiculous.

I always get a kick when someone makes a blanket statement about the backgrounds of people they don't know on the Internet.

THAT's annoying. Let the news channels cover that shit. I tuned in to watch football, not get the latest on the soap opera. Same thing in Rio with the swimmers. I'm here to watch the olympics, not hear about some jackasses acting like jackasses.

Kap can protest what he wants, when he wants, how he wants. After all, that's a right this country has afforded him. But the fact that the NFL has taken his cause and made it about the protest is stupid. .....
Seems to me that the NFL is going to do whatever makes the most $$$. And viewership = $$$. They know that existing viewers who are outraged (whether about Kaep's stance or about the fact that Kaep's kneeling is even being shown on TV) really aren't going to stop watching games. They may grumble and complain, but they'll still watch the game. Existing viewership isn't going to decline because they showed a 5-second clip of Kaep kneeling.

However, there may be those who otherwise wouldn't be watching an NFL game and will watch at least the national anthem part to see Kaep (and others) kneel, perhaps out of curiosity. Those additional viewers (and advertising that they can show around the time of the national anthem)? That's free money.

You are probably right, although it the gripes are more about the 15 minutes of chatter than the 5 seconds of Kaep kneeling (or the other guys fisting each other - double entendre intentional). Also, what you have described is an act of degrading the product for the purposes of money. One of the many evils of capitalism that some people decry while not protesting. A skosh hypocritical (for some).

The thing is, I'm not so sure it degrades the product. The national anthem isn't played during game time. I'm guessing (based on very few data points) that most TV viewers tune in after the game has started (since most TV viewers don't like to sit around and wait for the action to start). Again, if they can get a fraction more viewership to tune into their telecast earlier with really any negative impact on the gametime telecast, it's a win-win for the NFL. Plus, the only time that I can tell where the kneeling/fisting comments and discussion come up are before the game, halftime and post-game.

I see your point. I think the product though is the whole production. Like the pregame shows that start 9 hours before the game starts (roughly) all the way through the postgame, which lasts until about 9 hours before the next game starts (heh). At least, they seem that long. I do get your point though. I just think the complaints seem to center around that not being why people tune in to football. I agree with Mr Tonka on this one, the real problem is not with the people doing it (or at least, not principally), it is with how their employer, the NFL allows and even promotes it. They are within their rights to limit what can and cannot be done during their time of employment from that perspective. Just look at how they regulate everything else (like what headphones and water bottles they are allowed to bring onto the field - or sidelines, even.)

I spill beer and chips all over myself like everyone else. Actually, I sit and watch--this topic has been brought up. Really, it is what is in your heart--when I am live at the moment I stand and when I watch on TV I have the "feeling." I know what I believe and I don't need to stand because no one is there--in a public place as where the event is happening I show the respect. I asked this question to my boss and good friend who is a Vietnam vet and he agreed with me. It is what is in your heart and at home you don't have to prove to anyone what that is.

The same boss/Vet has abstained from watching any games. Says he is done with the NFL. I'm not..or even close, this is small stuff and more media gossip..but I just think sports should be sports, church should be church(whatever that may be), politics should be politics and political bands should be whatever they want to be.

I'm kind of old school in that the anthem just seems like the beginning to a fun filled event. To me, it just signifies how we have the opportunity to be involved in a sporting event in a free country that people died or were injured for. Two days ago, I drove by that cemetery in Colma with the rows upon rows of gravestones....and it's touching....if all these people did not show up for WWII we would not have NFL. The anthem, to me, is not about police brutality or inequality but about those that made it possible to even have the ability to kneel at a football game.

This is an example of missing the point. I never said you couldn't get upset at what he was protesting or the medium he chose to use.....it's just incredibly self righteous of you to do so as his "theme" revolves around the unfair treatment of blacks by law enforcement in this country - and by exercising "your right" to be angry at him for doing so, you are also missing his point (or just ignoring it).

And another missing the point - you're blaming the NFL for sensationalizing it, when you should be blaming the media coverage. ESPN/whoever doesn't have to focus the camera on those who are "protesting". I'm sure the NFL doesn't want them to as it's led to nothing but bad press for them, but alas the media is tied so deeply within the monetization of the NFL, they are allowed to film whatever they want and Goodell won't interfere.

Either way it's whatever. You're bitching and moaning about something - this is the response. You could have chosen to ignore it as well, but you made this post. So I couldn't help with my response. It's not an attack on you or anyone else. It's just one's perspective of the situation.

I don't care. Personally I will always follow the US flag code, but at the same time I generally don't judge people or give a shit what they do as long as it's not endangering or hurting anybody.

I don't think there are any points i've missed.

There is no such thing as bad press, not for Kap anyway. I'm not angry about anything, least of all his choice to "protest". Like you, i have an opinion about it. It doesn't mean i'm upset.

The NFL is hamstrung because if they silence it, they are racist. If they do nothing, they piss off the people who don't want to witness the circus.

Protesting on your own time is one thing

He was on the clock and is subject to the rules/guidelines of his employer

If the teams and NFL put up with it they will quickly find that the fans will not and will boycott......its already happening
