7 Series vs S-class

750Li vs S550... Which would you get? This have probably been debated here before, but just want to collect some opinion. A family member of mine needs a new luxury car.

It will be used as a DD. Fuel economy is not a factor. It will be self-driven. There will be monthly long trips so comfort is a must. Which would you get?

You're on a 7 series forum... let me break it to you now, the results are going to favor the 7.

Honestly in this scenario, it comes down to looks. Does he like the look of the 7 more? Or the S? Both have extensive navigation systems, excellent comfort... the 7 will drive better, but the S looks more upscale.

Both are excellent cars, he can't go wrong.

I would wait to see the F01 7 series in the showroom as it probably is a significant step up from the current 7 series.

I know this is a 7 series forum. I love bimmers and my vote goes to the 7. But look at this, if comfort was a main concern, will the 7 still be a winner?

Honestly, looks aside, the new 7 is a generation ahead of the current S, so technically (and rationally thinking) it should be better.

If looks are included, which is a subjective matter, I think the new 7 absolutely mercs the current S.

However, if we were talking current 7 (E65) vs. current S, I'd take the S in a heartbeat.

Newer technology, better looking, faster, more engaging to drive (assuming), blah blah.

The Merc is a very nice car, but.....it's just not fun. Drove a new s550. Just didn't do it for me. Would be fine for just interstate travel or going out to dinner. Does not handle like a BMW. My wifes 745 felt much more alive. Both are great cars. My money will be on the new 750 when it arrives in spring.

But for those without a fast car and need a car that's luxurious, large, and still slightly engaging, this could be it.

That's not my point. My point is that wouldn't it be better if you use something else to go fast with? A car as heavy as the 7-series or the s-class will have too much inertia to be nimble anyways.

Well yeah, but you're not getting our (or at least my) point either.

If you could set up a ranking system that rated each luxury car's dynamic capabilities, as irrelevant to this class of cars as it may be, it would go like this (from greatest to least):

BMW>Audi>Mercedes>Lexus

You could choose any one of these, and each suits your own style. If you want pure comfort, the Lexus (admittedly) takes the cake. If you want a good doseage of dynamic capabilities alongside a plush ride, you'd most likely opt for a BMW. The Audi and Merc manage to mix those up a little better, but they're like a jack of all trades (though the Merc probably takes the cake of the current gen in terms of tech).

Ya see what I mean?

Hmm, I tried the 750Li, and I currently own an S600L. The BMW definitely wins in specifications and technology, and is much more appealing to drive and faster than the S500 (mine is the 600), but somehow I just don't get the feel-good factor as I get in my Mercedes, or maybe I'll just wait for the 760Li. So, head says BMW, heart stays with the Mercedes. I'll have both.
