I got a few minor scratches/chips on the rear bumper during my ED from the bellmen taking out and putting in our luggage.

It gets fixed for free by BMW... just means more time spent waiting...

Odd that they got rid of them. They are supposed to work in the same way as if your normal remote had a dead battery. You can also hold those against the steering wheel column for 10 seconds.

we tried that. apparently the key does not have a battery inside of it so you can't program it. curious to see if someone on the board can try it (and if it works video it).

You are absolutely right. I just noticed that too. I guess they figured you don't need the spare key?!?

I personally never had a need for the spare key on my BMWs...

its a good thing to have if you lose your key as you can keep it on your wallet, or thats my rationale at least

I can report that it works! And it works quite well.

I made sure I left my remote keys in the house and just used the spare key to unlock the car. Once you unlock the car with the key, it also disarms the alarm system (I assume the transceiver in the door handle communicates with the chip in the plastic portion of the spare key to do this). Once inside, I held the plastic portion of the key next to the steering wheel column as per the little symbol printed in that location and after about 10 seconds, I pressed the start/stop button while I was pushing down the break and the engine started up and the car 'came alive' just the same way when I have my remote key in my pocket!

Hope this helps.

A word of caution about using the spare key to start your car:

I just noticed that it erased a lot of my presets once I drove the car again with my remote key. I noticed that all my programmable buttons were all blank, the map view was defaulted and was set in 'map facing north' mode, my radio stations seem to have changed, the preferences I had set up for the external device (USB memory stick I use for my music) were all gone, etc.

Not sure what else it may have changed. I did notice that it at least remembered my seat, steering wheel and mirror potions...

xDrive50i - Are you sure it didn't just change the profile being used? Maybe if you go to the profile selection screen you can switch it back to your previous one?

The profile should be associated with the key you use. At least that's the way it should work, so that you don't have to manually change the profile.

So after I entered the car with my regular remote key, the car should have picked up on it and used my profile. Next time I am going to drive the car I will check to see if the profile has been changed or a different one is in use...

I'll let you know...

Jblackbelt, does your car (since it is a 2010 mdel) still have the symbol printed on the right side of the steering column?

so after going back and forth with BMW (corporate, not dealership) would someone be so kind to do a video of starting the car with the spare key (make sure the remotes are visibly outside the car), this way i have some proof for BMW, as they still claim it is not possible with 09 (they say the manual does not say it for 09, just says it says it lets you in and out of the car) or 2010

I have to see if I can find the time to do a video for you.

Last time I tried the spare key to unlock and start the car, my remote was approximately 15 to 20 feet away. The car was parked just outside my front entrance and the remote was in my house inside my jacket that I had left by the front entrance.

I just checked the 2009 owners manual and it does seem to only mention the remotes for the emergency start procedure and not the spare key.
I know that the car did start when I used the spare key, and I am pretty sure the car was NOT communicating with the remote keys as they have to be fairly close or even inside the car for the communication to work!

Just out of curiosity, why do you want/need the spare key???

The remotes have a mechanical key to unlock the car in case the remote doesn't work and then you can just use the remote to hold it up to the steering column to start the car so you don't really need a spare key...

I personally never had a need for the spare key.

good news. looks like we can hold off on a video. had service manager call bmw rep (rather than just coporate). they said it can start the car and are going to try and program the key tomorrow.

as for why i want the key, we had an experience when we had the 6 series where the key fell out of a jacket pocket at a restaurant (took someone elses car) and went back to the office. tried to get into the car later and was not able to. if it was not for the black spare key i would not have been able to start the 6 to drive back to the restaurant. also when parked in a garage in nyc, if the garage misplaces the key, i am stuck. this gives me an option.

Good point! I can see why you would want one

I hope they can program one for you and that it will work for you. Keep us posted.

thanks, will do. i think part of the problem is that with the '09 model the car came programmed with the 3 keys. on past cars (6 and 7's) the black key was never programmed, hence why their is a lot of confusion. im told we were the first key ordered in the US
