Totally. Didn't it start off as an Aussie engineered (Holden), fleet-only vehicle for smokies?

I haven't had the chance to drive one. 1. Cuz I got about 1lbs of stainless steel holding my femur together, 2. Cuz I've had bad experiences in the past getting to test SS model vehicles.

You can find my OP on BP, but basically refused by 2 different dealers to test drive the Trailblazer SS and Corvette (separate occasions). I eventually bought the TB SS from a dealer that I called ahead to confirm a test drive.

BTW E60 M5 was one of the biggest piece of shit cars I've ever had....

Wait for it...

...in terms of reliability. It spent 3 months at the dealer for a failed oil squirter. Also, SMG pump recall. I still loved it but would never get one again.

They are sweet looking cars, especially the earlier ones (Gen 1). I probably wouldn't be able to truly appreciate it unless it's a restomod or pro touring.

Who wants to adjust carbs when the temps change and start a car using choke or deal with points distributors.... Damn.

I rebuilt a 1970 GTO when I was 15, (20 some years ago) and hope someday to purchase another. Was it a great handling car, no. Stop good? No. Go like stink in a straight line, yes Make great sounds and smells, yes! Ultimate in my book for what it was built for.

Back in there day they were good straight line cars. By today's standards not at all. The GTOs on original frames are still somewhat rare as they could go but couldn't stop. Lots of GTOs with damaged front ends.

And your point is??? Cars from that era were either fast in a straight line or much slower, but nimble.... almost none were ever both.

That's ok, I've already been called worse on this thread.

My point was that there are still guys who claim that GTOs of yore are BETTER than cars today. Or, the claims were that these GTOs were the end all be all. I just didn't want to hear any of that on this thread.

It's like mentioning BMWs and there's always some guy saying nothing is better than a 2002.

So, there's a nuance from what you're saying.

I hope this clarifies.

bjcarls , respect what you're saying. And agree. We're cool.

My post was not meant as a troll or to attract flame. Having been a CCA Member for more than 15 years, I'm absolutely sick of hearing people talk about how great the 2002 is and how no BMW ever made after can compare. At one point, I even tried to understand the logic by comparing stats against the 2002.

I will admit that the 2002 was great in its contemporary setting and still has its charm today. However, I don't give it much more contemporary kudos beyond nostalgia and perhaps "feel".

My point was not to discount the 1st and 2nd Gen GTOs. They indeed had their place in history. In fact, I DO think it's a cool car. Otherwise, why would I even bother driving it?

I just didn't want to hear any guys chime in and pull a "2002".

I hope people coming into this read take time to read instead of flaming.

I owned a 1966 GTO. 389, Tri-Power, 4-Speed, and 3.9 posi rear gearing. It would lay down two strips of rubber with ease and "chirp" the "wide oval" tires up through the gears. It was a straight line terror for its time.

Ever notice there are hardly any good car commercials anymore? Especially American car Marques that actually try to SELL or HIGHLIGHT performance?
