Nice. Looks like a great spot to relax. Got any more pics of the hotel itself?

I don't, but here is their link. It's definitely not 5 star, but it's directly outside the gate, and has a bar and a restaraunt, plus I sprung for the hot tub in the room. Checks all my boxes

I've seen that place and it is in a nice spot. During Summer there might be a lot of traffic going by though. We stayed at Tenaya lodge the last time which was nice.

Ed, looks like you had a great trip to the park.

I just returned from New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Here is one of the visitors to my balcony:

Trying to figure out the best settings for sports on a D4. Not getting as much detail as I'd like. I feel like I could lower the ISO but then I risk not freezing the subject properly. Suggestions?

This one was a little better in terms of detail, but I was closer and therefore had to crop less.

Maybe my issue is just not having enough length to get the proper detail. In the above image I had to crop probably 80% of the whole photo! For the below image, I think I cropped about 50-60%...

I guess a 70-200 2.8 would be better for shots like that.

My pops actually has one of those, but it's WAY too heavy for handheld action shots I think. No?

We went on a short cruise last weekend. Port Canaveral, FL to Nassau and back. This was shot from our balcony on the ship. Not the best shot as it was seriously hazy, but I've always been amazed at the size of this building, which is the Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Canaveral. It's about 12.5 miles away. Absolutely enormous building.

Lots of heavily armed patrols in the harbor. This is the Coast Guard. There was also a Navy patrol boat and several sheriffs and local police boats.

Not the Up-Close-and-Personal shot that DC got, but here's my last encounter with a pelican.

Yeah, cropping is your most likely culprit. 80% is a lot and the D4 has a relatively low pixel-density.

Shooting Canon, for animals, I try to shoot at 1/1200-sec and higher, at f/8 to f/11. That will often require an ISO of 800 or 1600 in all but the very best light. Depending on the subject, I'll bring the f-stop down to f/4.

Looks good to me. Was that from a boat?

Land lubber! That's the coast guard.

Here's my shot of the same type boat:

Yes. From the balcony of our cabin. 8 decks up.

Dave I was hoping you'd reply, thanks so much! I'll try those settings and see how I make out!
