Potentially looking into buying

I am looking into buying a 2016 and up 740i. I had a few questions.

I am really interested in getting a 2016 740i as it has the B58 engine. My question is, is that the same engine in the supra? I am asking because the supra I believe came out in 2020, so I am guessing there has to be differences in the engines between 2016 to 2020. I have heard good things about it in terms of reliability.

The only other issue I am having is that most of the 740i's are not as well equipped as the 750i's. Also its not a huge price difference between a used 740i and 750i. I am trying to stay away from the 750i due to reliability issues. I also like working on my own cars and its always nicer to work on a V6 engine in the engine bay of car that can fit a V8.

I am coming from a porsche panamera and contemplating between the 740i vs newer panamera 4s.

Having a 2017 740i myself, It’s thrown me 0 Issues since I got it in December of 2022. The B58 is shared with the Supra and is a reliable motor, not a N62 motor in reliability it’s actually trustworthy. The 750i for 2016+ got the N63TU (Technical Update) and it’s not as bad as the original N63. But the B58 and N63TU are both fantastic motors, Really good power and reliability if taken care of.

You will need to shop around to find a fully optioned out G12 740. Although not as difficult, it still requires a bit of "shopping around" and patience to find a G12 750 fully optioned, all in a the desired interior and exterior combination.

I've noticed not too many G12's come with the rear seating package, and even fever come with the executive lounge. I guess folks also don't spring for the B&W, which is sort of a suprise.

The only G12 option that I could do without, but is cool, is the LED lit sunroof. On the other hand, the G12 option that I was not aware of, but pretty stoked that my G12 has, is the acoustic-green glass.

For example, my 740i only came with the Executive Package, and Drives Assistant, Drivers Assistant II, Ivroy White Nappa Leather and Jabota Brown Exterior Paint. It’s sad to see these 7 Series aren’t fully loaded.

The b58 in the 16 740 is a gen1 b58 and the supra is a gen2. Gen1 b58 is still very reliable though and makes good power modified. Its a i6 not a v6.

Keep an eye out and you can find a nicely loaded 2016-2019 740. Try to find a CPO if possible

Everything will work out fine if you are not in a rush and have flexibility to shop around. I started my search for specific year2016-2018 740iX over Christmas holidays in 2019 and found one / made purchase in March 2020. You are correct (and the dealers told me same thing) that it is easier to find 750's vs 740's and the price difference is not really that much greater for the reasons you cited. Main reason is 750's depreciate more because there are just so many more of them and most if not all are absolutely loaded with every option. I think the engine is PLENTY of power for me, but of course I use my car for city driving 90% of the time so not a lot to measure by!

I just bought a 2020 740i XDrive with the M sport package and cold weather package.

It's got a ton of options. 40k miles, one owner. After working out the deal we got it down to $45,699.

I was not intending to buy a 7, I was actually looking for a 5, but this one popped up at our local BMW dealer and our salesman called me about it.

Glad he did...I love this car.

I am so happy with my purchase. I'm like a kid at Christmas. I have spent 7 days now driving this vehicle, one day going on a small trip with the wife and I'm just blown away at everything that this vehicle does.
