2019 Acura RDX vs The Competition

Anyone considering this? I'm debating whether to wait until May/June and get a fully loaded RDX or get a new/lightly used Macan S/GTS.

RDX offers: best bang for the value, all the latest tech, 16 speakers ELS 3D sound system, flat rear floor, etc. It looks pretty good too. Only drawback is that it's turbo charged 4-cylinder only.

https://www.acura.com/future-vehicle...EaAkxkEALw_wcB

Macan offers: best driving dynamics and good looks. Cons are: $10-18k more expensive depending on which one I go with, more expensive to maintain, doesn't have the latest tech, Bose sound system which I heard is just okay.

If money were no object then Macan GTS for sure. I can afford either, actually. However, it's always good to step back and evaluate instead of buying with hearts all the time.

Thoughts?

Looks great and I'm excited that Acura/Honda seems to have gotten out of the design rut they were in for a while there. Still overall not a fan of a turbo 4 for an SUV... that was one of the main complaints of the prior gen RDXs. I'm sure they could have gotten a six in that engine bay...

Unless you're buying something like a Trackhawk, you're likely not buying an SUV for the fun car so spend your $ wisely & go Acura

Ugly as hell...if you can afford the maintenance/repairs, check out a 2011-2014 Cayenne Turbo or 2013-2014 Cayenne GTS, some real nice ones out there in the $40-50k range. I just picked one up that had $156k sticker, insanely loaded, with 58k miles for $47k. Macans are sweet too, but V8 is the way to go.

Why would you get a FWD based CUV?
I agree it looks nice but no comparison to a Macan.

It looks like a cross between a Mazda CX-5 and Honda CRV to me. It’s not doing anything for me.

Not a fan of the Acura styling. For a budget SUV I’d pick a forester or tiguan over the rdx. IMO Macan wins hands down, but I’m biased as I plan to pick up the GTS later this year.

It depends on what you’re looking for in a daily driver, but perhaps you answered your own questions. You said money isn’t really the issue as you could afford the more expensive Macan (which is an all around nicer vehicle in my opinion) but the RDX has piqued your interest because it does offer value over the Macan at the same time.

So it seems like you’re pretty interested in the RDX. May/June isn’t far off. At the very least I think it’s worth the wait to go see an RDX in person and drive one. No one here can give you any valuable input on the RDX (driving experience) as it is on a new platform (finally not a suped up CRV) and Acura looks like they’re getting their shit together. A-Spec doesn’t look half bad.

Huge improvements over the last few generations.

Yes, the A-Spec is what I'm looking at. Just feels weird to have a 4 cylinder in a CUV but I understand lots of makes are going this route. It's been a few months since I sold the BMW and haven't decided on a "new" car yet so I'm getting impatient.

I have a prior gen MDX and it is a fantastic value. While it's no Cayenne in performance and doesn't have the prestige of a German marque, it is well-optioned, cost much less brand new, and it has the third row that we have used quite a bit. Not sure what we'll opt for when it comes time to replace it in a few years' time. The current Volvo XC90 impressed me quite a bit on a recent holiday when I had one as a rental for a week. I'm not a huge fan of "performance" SUVs. I just don't see the need to spend so much on a rugged mini-van alternative.

Go with the RDX. Buying an suv based on its performance numbers is always a mistake. Buy for the comfort, reliability and tech. A car will always be more fun to drive than an suv.

They did a nice job on it. The current one somehow sells despite being an ugly dressed up CR-V.

I am with you OP. I think it looks great, and if you see what Hondata is doing with the accord, these engines can be boosted quite a bit. If Acura uses the same 10speed but gives it better clutches it could hold maybe 400lb/ft of tq. Combined with sh-awd, and it should be pretty quick.

I want to know why the Japanese insist on these stupid touchpad based controllers for nav instead of the easier to use wheel.

Because they work better. Especially when they're 4x the size of BMW's. Audi is ditching the wheel, Volvo's setup works great and even my VW works better than our BMW. Wheels will be gone soon. It's the Blackberry of today.

Nothing Toyota or Honda has today appeals to me at all. They're all too big. Considered the current RDX but don't like the design or current technology. The new one definitely looks better and is really good value for the money. I feel that if I get anything other than a Macan I would be lusting after one so we'll see.
