Z/28 vs GT3 by autoweek

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2014...NEWS/140329817

"The Porsche is quick down the straights, but the Z/28 sticks better in the corners and feels more like a race car."

Half the price, only .5 second slower. Chevy FTW

I would be surprised the Z/28 is sticker in the corners.

"But, if both of these are in my garage, it would be GT3 for the street and Z/28 for the track, every time.”

This makes no sense given the GT3 was FASTER on the track and arguably LESS comfortable on the street

Considering the Z/28 weighs 700lbs more than the GT3, this is utterly amazing!

The C7 Z06 is going to be insane - and for the price of a base Carrera S.

Even the next 'Alpha' chassis Camaro will be excellent. A much lighter, much more capable chassis.

May be faster, but is it more enjoyable on the track?

And everyone is different and opinions will vary greatly on that.

Fun factor. Z28 is a manual.

“The GT3 went to charm school; there's less rattle and hum inside. It feels much more like a daily driver” compared to old GT3s and the Z/28, he says.

Nice comparo. I still can't figure out why the Z28 is so damn heavy despite the strict diet. Is it just the big heavy unibody?

The z/28 is a pure track car. No standard AC, among other things, make this car a bad DD.

If I had the money, it would still be the GT3. You will also get more girls

To 90% of the public, the z/28 looks like every other camaro. The gt3 on the other hand stands out like a sore thumb with the spoiler and aggressive looks. But if you want to make noise on the track, z/28.

Yeah Zeta is a heavy platform. Camaro will lose weight when it changes to Alpha( same platform as the ATS and CTS) next year for the 2016 MY.

Well to 90% of the public the GT3 looks like any other run of the mill 911, except with a boy racer wing and tacky yellow seatbelts.

And I never quite understood why guys think that car x or car y will help them get laid. Girls don't know or care about cars in general. They only care about $$$. The only cars that might help pulling in girls are exotics like Ferrari, Lambo, Rolls, etc. And no, a Porsche 911 is not an exotic.

I would take the z/28 for sure. Real manual no ac for me, white and change her to slicks right out of the gate.

"Our test car has air conditioning and a six-speaker sound system, bringing it to 3,851 pounds."

These results beg the question, does weight really matter if the rest of the car is extremely well-sorted?

I know a lot of folks get caught up in the weight discussion but honestly, with the technology available today, I think a car's weight is less important than ever.

I agree, but technology can only help to a certain extent and can't cheat physics.

If the Z/28 weighed 700lbs less, like the GT3, I can guarantee it'd be a lot faster around the track.
I race a 335 that weighs 3,200lbs. I can't come anywhere near the lighter cars in the corners. If I dropped even 300lbs off the car, it would be significant.

For years, GM was screwing up by putting crappy Goodyear F1s while everybody else was using PS2. Finally, GM figured out that magazine bench racing and #s sell car and now they're putting the STICKIEST tires on their Corvettes and now this car.

It's pretty obvious that the 305 width tires around all 4 corners is the secret here. Mechanical grip is what allows you to turn quicker and since turns are the slowest most time consuming part of the track, it makes the most difference. Stick those Trofeos on the GT3 and I guarantee that instead of 1/2 second, it would've been more like 1 1/2 or even 2 seconds of difference. You can't have two well sorted out cars with one weighing about 700 pounds more be that similar given that they have about the same HP (well, slight difference - but being offset by quicker shifts of the PDK) be only 1/2 second apart on a 2.4 mile track.

I'm not surprised by the results.

The heaviest Camaro (ZL1) is still lighter than the V8 versions of the 6-Series and E-Class coupe - all 3 are similar sized. They are just large cars with big engines.

The lighter weight helped the GT3 in the straights (of all places).

I think I'm more impressed that a heavier car can achieve those type of results. And my point was that technology today is coming close to cheating physics.

You just wouldn't believe me if I told you a 3,851-lb car gave a GT3 all it wanted around a circuit.

I almost edited my post to say (except for Godzilla). Knew that was going to happen.
