Curious to member's thoughts/experiences with the newer or recently new models? I'm contemplating buying one for work purposes and leave my bmw as a weekend car.

My brother has a 2014 and loves it. They also hold their value extremely well so it's always a good buy.

What engine did he choose? I'm leaning towards the 4.0 V6 Access Cab TRD, although there are 2 versions of TRD from my understanding: Sport and Pro

He has the 6cyl.

I had a Taco a few years back. Amazing truck! I Have it for 5 years and never had a problem with it and I had over 115K miles on it by the time i sold it. Low maintenance, they hold their value very well and look great. Definitely opt for the V6 though as the 4 cylinders just do not have the power you need for hauling or towing. And if you can get the TRD sport or off road. It comes with lots of extra goodies.

I've read that they now offer 2 trims of TRD: Sport and Pro, with Pro being the option for hardcore off roaders, while Sport is not as hardcore. I may be wrong on the names though, not sure if they call it Sport or what.

How is the V6 on power though? Numbers make it look like a slouch and outdated technology but I'm curious to how it fares in real life use.

It's not a glugging V8 but it's also not a large truck so despite the low power figures, it doesn't feel doggish.

Yeah I was concerned about the V6 power and the trucks weight leading to a truck that is slow. My dad has a 5.7 V8 tundra and it's great on power and crappy on mpg, naturally.

X2. The V6 is a very well built motor and is pretty quick for being what it is. They might have changed the names but they did have the TRD Sport and TRD Off Road. The TRD sport had an LSD Diff and more of a street setup with sport tires. The off road had a locking diff and more of an off road suspension setup and tires. Both came in 4x4 or pre runner (2x4) options though.

Sorry I had it wrong: Correct, they do have a TRD sport package which is more for the street setup. But I still remember reading they had 2 separate TRD off road packages- one was a "mild package" while the other one was the more hard core add ons, the TRD Pro. I don't know the name of the "mild package" though. If I do purchase, I will want it to be a TRD off road package.

They might have added a package after I had mine then. You cant go wrong with either package though

Yeah the 2015 MY 4Runner, Tundra, and Tacomas now have a TRD pro package.

Bought a brand new fully loaded Tacoma Quad Cab, Limited Pkg, TRD Pkg, etc in 2004, and still have it. GREAT truck, serves its purpose and is still running strong 10+ years later with 130k miles on it!

Just picked up a 2014 Base model Tundra a couple months ago as well because we needed something a bit bigger for work, and it's also an amazing truck.

Previously had a 2003 4Runner as well. lol. Needless to say, never had one single issue that was out of ordinary maintenance and I would highly recommend any of them! Definitely go with the V6over the 4 cyl though!

Yeah my dad has a 1998 4Runner with over 340k on it. It's only had brake pads changed one time due to age and the clutch was replaced once. The only other issue was that it needed an ignition at around 300k. It was my car when I was in high school and it was then a lease. I beat the absolute shit out of it offroading and it's still alive and well.

Noob story of mines for laughs: I had to go pick up cement and cinderblock, took dads Tundra 5.7 with trailer, they load the pallets onto trailer and I'm about to head home. But I stop when I look at receipt he gave me: it said pallets combined weight was 13k lbs!! At that point I remember that this truck can only tow up to 10k lbs. i was in a hurry as they needed the supplies, so i winged it and drove home, slowly and cautiously obviously. Truck drove fine, didn't notice the extra 3k lbs haha. Makes me wonder if the truck is underrated or it can handle a little extra weight.

Those towing figures are based on road safety factors like stopping distance, not whether the truck is actually capable of pulling that much weight. In other words, it's not whether or not it can move that weight, it's whether or not it can do so safely.

What he said! Technically the Tundra can pull a space shuttle but I doubt that would be safe on the streets and at speed haha

I remember a lot of people criticizing that incident saying it wasn't truly towing the space shuttle, that it was be moved by something else? Idk all the facts so I could only speculate.

Just saw the new Tacoma's and they look nice. Question: by introducing a new version, will this automatically mean a tank in prices for the prior generation, new or used? If so, I was going to go look at one this weekend.
