Porsche Going Turbo for future 911s

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/p...mpaign=ongoing

Quote:
You have to respect legal requirements [for lower CO2], so yes we're thinking turbos for standard 911s. You can't afford to keep an engine for 10 years any more.
Quote:
A version of [GT3 RS engine], with turbos but less power, strangely, will be what's in the facelifted 911s in 2016.
Porsche confirming they will go turbocharged flat six for all future 911 models starting with 2016 facelift except for the GT3, which will still be NA.

Quote:
Emissions are important for us," said Hatz, "And we will reduce faster than the industry. Every new model will have lower CO2 than before. There aren't so many technologies to do it. If you look at euro per g/km then it's turbo. Then at the end of the decade electrification has to be the next huge step." Does that mean a hybrid for the all-new 911? "Yes.
Confirming 911 hybrid as well.

Quote:
He also acknowledged that Porsche is developing a four-cylinder turbo for the Cayman and Boxster ranges from 2016. Is it a flat four? "It's not an in-line four or a V4."
Also, they are developing a turbo 4 for the cayman and boxter.

Can't escape euro emissions standards it seems.

Will this thread devolve into how a "Porsche has lost its way!" thread and how they're sell outs or is that reserved for only posts in this forum related to any new BMW?

No because Porsche has been doing turbos for a long time and makes what are the best turbo engines in the world.
Porsche also knows how to tune a turbo engine, and mate it to a perfectly tuned suspension and not overwhelm the chasis like some other manufactures.

I love turbos and the ability for nice modding which comes along with them. This is all good news as far as I'm concerned.

If all 911 will be turbo, then will there be a 911 Turbo?

There's a Macan Turbo, even though the Macan S is also turbocharged.

I lament the sound, 911TT's sound like mail trucks compared to non turbos. But the performance will be hard to beat.

I have been hearing the 992 turbos will be hybrid systems ala 918.

I've always preferred the NA Flat-Sixes over their turbocharged brethren.
Still, it isn't as blasphemous since Porsche has had a long tradition with turbochargers.
Ironic, though, that every 911 will be a turbo 911 but not a "911 Turbo"

I'll dearly miss the naturally aspirated GTS models, especially the NA 4.8L V8 in the Cayenne GTS.

Really hoping they keep the GT3s normally aspirated.

All Porsche 911's to be turbo

Looks like NA engines are slowly going the way of the manual transmission.

Porsche to go turbo

I am interested to see the comments that people will provide about Porsche potentially becoming "turbo" for a lot of their 911's. From what I have seen (IMHO) BMW has been slammed for going "turbo" on a lot of their vehicles and now the C63 is turbo, Porsche is going this route, and it will be interesting to see what Audi will do with say a future RS4. They definitely don't sound as good, but there are positives (along with negatives) to having a turbo engine.

It's going to be an uproar, look at the move from air cooled to water cooled (and look at the values of the last air cooled engine). The Euro guys will use turbos as an intermediate step until there are combo turbo/electric engines as they don't have a choice anymore due to emissions and mileage regulation. This is why at the LA auto show, the GT350 generated so much excitement from all the journos..it was crazy, as it flew in the face of all the trends and expect waitlists to be insane for those cars. I'm highly temped to buy some of these last limited production N/A engine cars, garage them, and hold on to them for enjoyment and price appreciation!

Eh, this badging thing is all fucked up across all manufacturers...a "3.0T" Audi is a supercharged V6, so who the hell cares anymore? I look forward to all 911's being turbo'd. Bring on the forced induction, I say.

Well I mean even Ford went TT V6 with the GT, though I sort of wish they put in the GT350 V8. Caddy/GM is going supercharge and turbo for their performance cars for the most part as well. GT350 is a nice surprise and I feel like probably the last of it's kind, even American makers will increasingly get pushed to FI.

It's just reality. Ferarri is turbo, AMG is turbo, M is turbo, etc. Emissions matter and no amount of burying of heads in the sand will change that.

Until electric has the tech to work mainstream (smaller/lighter batteries etc) performance cars will be turbo. A few people can 'uproar' all they like, but it won't matter, they will be great cars and sell well and the world will carry on just as it did before. Car companies don't make cars for 50 year old motor journalists yearning to recreate some car they drove 35 years ago, they make them for drivers who buy them today. Pining for nostalgic days of years past won't change what is actually happening.

No company will avoid it.

And it is fine.

"When" Porsche move to turbo motors for their normal 911 lines, I don't want to be around for all the bitching from the Porsche guys. You think turbos were complained about at length with BMW/M cars? Just wait...

<= 993, Last of the "real Porsche" (air cooled)
<= 997.1 Turbo, Last of the "real Porsche" (Metzger engine)
<= 997.2 GT3, Last of the "real Porsche" (Metzger engine + Manual)
and so on and so on...

Well it is unavoidable...people will have to accept it or move on to the electric motor + turbo motor which fixes the turbo deficiencies and beyond that it won't matter for daily commuters once we go driverless.

I know a few who got their hands on some of the last air-cooled Porsches, those values have skyrocketed and done much better than any of their paper investments plus they got to have a lot of fun driving them around. Big smiles on their faces all the time and for good reason, they're awesome to drive. I view this transition as an awesome opportunity to own/collect cars that will be future classics that will be driven purely for fun. Commutes in the future will be driverless anyway, which will be a great benefit to society overall as you will have less stressed out people, no traffic, and more time to relax/sleep in the car or do productive work. The enthusiast classics will be for pure sensory enjoyment, where you don't have to worry about compromises made for daily driving or fuel efficiency that detract from the pure driving experience.

+1.

I was about to pull the trigger on a '95 993 that was simply beautiful until we found extreme rust on the underside during the PPI. Made my eyes rain . I'm a HUGE fan of air cooled Porsches - amazing machines.

If you really wanna see the Porsche elite get angry, go to Rennlist and type what's in bold.
